Parental Fee Family Stories Outline

The Arc of Minnesota is gearing up for the 2004 Legislative Session. We expect that, as in the 2003 Legislative Session, we will have a very difficult time at the State Capitol. One issue we will focus on again is the drastic increase in parental fees. We want to reduce these fee increases, and we need your help to do that.

One way you can help us is to write your story on how you have been hurt by the fee increases. Your story may be presented to state legislators and the media. Below are some points that you can address when you are putting together your story. Your story should be no longer than 350 words.

Please send a copy to your local Arc chapter and a copy to The Arc of Minnesota office. Send the copy for The Arc of Minnesota, along with a photo of your family or your child with a disability, to Mike Gude either via e-mail at arcmn113@yahoo.com, via fax at 651-523-0829, or by regular mail at 770 Transfer Road, Suite 26, St. Paul, MN 55114.

Upon receipt of your story, The Arc of Minnesota will send you a consent form to sign and return, giving us permission to use your story in our campaign.

Thanks in advance for your advocacy!

1. Describe the needs of your family member with a disability.

2. Describe the goals for your child.

3. Describe the services your child receives funded by Medical Assistance that help your child work on his or her goals.

4. Identify your family's other health insurance providers and how much your family pays out-of-pocket for this insurance.

5. Describe any out-of-pocket expenses that your family has over and above what you would normally spend.

6. What was your previous parental fee? What is your current parental fee? What is the % of increase?

7. How has this fee increase impacted your family and the services your child receives? How has it affected you financially?
